Jean Nouvel counts among his many titles and distinctions the Gran Premio Nacional de Arquitectura de Francia (1987), the Premio Aga Khan (for his work on the Instituto del Mundo árabe de Paris) and the Gold Medal of the Academy of Architecture. He is an honorary member of the American Institute of Architects and of the Royal Institute of British Architects and Commandeur dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
